Bernard Povanda, PT, COMT, of Physical Therapy Associates, Inc. of NEPA Discusses Fall Risk Prevention at the Mid Valley Active Older Adult Community Center

On Wednesday, March 29, 2017, Bernard J. Povanda, PT, COMT spoke to a wonderful group of older adults regarding the epidemic of falls among the older population. He discussed risk factors and fall prevention tips.  He also brought a piece of equipment used in his clinics called the Biodex Balance System SD ™.  The physical therapists use the Biodex Balance System SD ™ to help patients with balance, dizziness and vestibular disorders. The system uses real-time visual biofeedback to teach patients how to overcome their balance problems.  It also provides fall risk screening tests and athletic knee injury screening tests.  Volunteers had their gait, strength and balance assessed in the demonstrations to see if they were at risk of falling.  The attendees were also given brochures and checklists to make their homes safer and ways to prevent falls.

Fall risk testing has been introduced as an innovative, life-saving program for older adults. There are many different types of assessment tools.  One such method used in our clinics is the Fall Risk Screening and Conditioning Program by Biodex.  This advanced technology can determine who is at risk of falling by identifying the individual risk factors of the patient. The physical therapist will then suggest a series of interventions that will aid in the prevention of a fall.  Please call to set up an appointment if you or a loved one is at risk of falling.
